Description
Diving back into your pages after the exhiliration of the idea has worn off can feel like a slog. But by separating mechanical and creative fixes, and working through three clear stages, your revisions can go a lot faster. We’ll look at shaping your story with dramatic structure (and how to know if you’re starting in the right place), increasing tension and pacing in scenes, and some quick-and-dirty fixes that will improve your writing craft immediately—no matter what level you’re starting at. Allison will also live-edit some volunteer pages to show just how quickly your writing can level up.
What Will We Do During This Class?
- Look at three types of dramatic structure for novels and memoir, and discuss how to use them to spot plot holes, weak scenes, and pacing adjustments.
- Learn the surefire way to know if your book is starting in the right place (and how to fix it if you’re starting too early in the story)
- Explore how to magically speed up the pacing of a scene—which also increases tension!
- Ask the key question that shows whether a scene has conflict.
- Learn what to do when you’re not feeling the creative mood—but you know you need to spend time on your book.
What Will You Get AFTER the Class?
- Allison’s Self-Editing Checklist and Dramatic Structure worksheets to guide your work at home.
